Eight illegal immigrants believed to be involved in a human smuggling operation were killed when their pickup truck crashed head-on into another vehicle while fleeing police in a Mexican border town, according to reports.
The fatal wreck happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday when a red Dodge pickup truck led troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety on a high-speed chase on US Highway 277 in the Texas border town of Del Rio, KXAS-TV reported.
The fleeing Dodge smashed head-on into a white Ford pickup, injuring an adult and a child, who were taken to a local hospital, KXAS said.
One man who was riding in the Dodge truck with the other immigrants was also injured and was likewise taken to a local hospital, the report said.
The driver of the Dodge fled the scene on foot but was later caught by cops.
“Due to injuries sustained, eight undocumented passengers from the Dodge pickup were pronounced deceased on scene,” police said in a statement to KSAT-TV.
“The driver and a child passenger from the Ford pickup and one undocumented passenger from the Dodge pickup were transported to a hospital in San Antonio and are in stable condition,” the statement said.
Police said no further information was immediately being released.
The deadly crash comes less than two weeks after 13 immigrants were killed in a horrific crash in Southern California after cutting a hole in the US border fence with Mexico.
Authorities said they believed they were part of an immigrant smuggling operation.
